Whose idea was it?

Doorway to Dignity is the brainchild of Wherever the Need, a Bath based charity that’s been actively involved in providing drinking water and sanitation to the poorest parts of Africa and India since 2000.

Wherever the Need endeavour to alleviate poverty and ill-health, primarily through the implementation of eco-sanitation systems, in a manner that empowers individuals and communities without undermining their tradition and culture. Wherever possible, we work on projects that are naturally sustainable, and implement them in an environmentally friendly way using materials that will not damage the planet.

Wherever the Need champion the use of ecosan (composting) toilets, which are clean, disease free and produce valuable agricultural fertiliser and compost from what many people regard as waste. These toilets last for decades, help produce higher crop yields, and save waterways and water sources from pollution.

Sanitation not only saves lives and creates healthier and richer communities, but these facilities provide a never before known self-respect and dignity. Hence the title of our creative arts campaign - Doorway to Dignity.
